September 24, 2024 | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. – No. 60 Mario Martinez Serrano and No. 107 Benito Sanchez Martinez both displayed impressive performances against a pair of ranked opponents at the ITA All-American Championships on Tuesday.
Sanchez Martinez continued his trend of dominant tennis by taking down UCF's 87th-ranked Yassine Dlimi in convincing fashion 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round of singles qualifying consolation. It was the junior from Germany's third career win over a ranked opponent in singles and first since clinching the highest-ranked win in program history over second-ranked South Carolina by beating No. 83 Casey Hoole 6-3, 6-4 on March 19, 2023.
Martinez Serrano was equally as efficient during his qualifying consolation match on Tuesday. The junior from Spain topped No. 100 Derek Pham of Oklahoma State 6-1, 6-3 to secure his first ranked win as a Bulldog after transferring in from Troy during the offseason.
The main draw of the tournament starts on Wednesday with No. 12 Petar Jovanovic taking on Duke's 53rd-ranked Sam Landau at 10 a.m. Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez, both All-Americans and the top-ranked team in collegiate tennis, will team up to take on No. 49 Andrew Delgade and Dhakshineswar Suresh of Wake Forest at 4:30 p.m.
