BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mississippi State goalkeeper Maddy Anderson has been named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week for the fifth time in her career following a dominant week in which she recorded two more shutouts to add to her stellar Bulldog career. Anderson's exceptional performances in goal have helped the Bulldogs remain one of the top defensive teams in the country and secure a six point opening week in the SEC.
The Seabrook, Texas, native has been a key figure in State's defensive success, collecting seven solo shutouts this season (eight combined) to improve her career total to 32. Anderson now ranks second in the NCAA for shutouts this year. Anderson ranks second in both the NCAA and SEC for goals against average (0.22. Anderson is also second in the NCAA in shutout percentage (.889) and fourth in save percentage (.917).
This week, Anderson guided the Bulldogs to back-to-back clean sheets against the SEC's two newest members. Anderson blanked Oklahoma on the road in the SEC opener before shutting out No. 11 Texas at home on Sunday. Through nine matches, the Bulldogs have conceded just two goals, thanks in large part to Anderson's leadership and stellar shot-stopping ability.
Mississippi State will look to keep up their defensive momentum as they head into their next SEC matchup on the road at South Carolina on Thursday before welcoming LSU to Starkville on Sunday.
