September 23, 2024 | Men's Golf
SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Josep Serra led the way for Mississippi State on the final day of the Valero Texas Collegiate. The senior shot 2-under and climbed 10 spots on the leaderboard to finish inside the top 25.
Serra began the round with a birdie on the very first tee. He also carded birdies on No. 8 and No. 18, bringing him to 2-under for the tournament at the challenging TPC San Antonio course. It was his second 2-under round of the tournament and his third par or better round of the young season. Serra tied for 19th.
"I thought we competed really well this week. We put ourselves in a good position going into the final round but didn't capitalize," head coach Dusty Smith said. "We did not play the par-5s well enough today and did not take advantage of a lot of our mid-range birdie opportunities."
All three of State's double bogeys came on par-5s throughout the round, but MSU recovered to see Ugo Malcor, Serra and Drew Wilson all card birdies on the par-5 Nos. 8 and 18.
Wilson carded two one additional birdie and shot a 1-over 73. He entered the round at even-par for the tournament. Garrett Endicott rebounded from a front-nine double bogey to shoot even-par over the final nine holes. Dain Richie and Malcor ended the event tied for 44th at 2-over for the tournament. Harrison Davis, playing as an individual, finished tied for 44th as well.
As a team, State shot 292 to finish at 4-over 864 for the tournament. The Bulldogs placed 10th. MSU returns to the course in one week at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The unique event will see the Bulldog men and women competing side-by-side on Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
"I know we have a very tough and resilient team that will fight through every shot." Smith added. "We have a quick turnaround and will immediately start our preparation for the Blessings Collegiate Invitational."
