Landry Lands First Wins Of The Fall
September 15, 2024 | Men's Tennis
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Sophomore Marshall Landry collected his first win of the fall on Sunday as Mississippi State closed out the final day of the SEC Challenge.
Landry lost his first singles set against Jake Kennedy 6-3 but evened things up with a 6-4 win in the second and then outlasted the Auburn redshirt freshman in a super tiebreaker 1-0[8].
In doubles, Landry and partner Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes found success against Kennedy and Will Nolan, downing the Tiger tandem 8-5.Â
And although Sunday put a bow on the SEC Challenge, four more Bulldogs are set to begin their fall seasons at the ITF Fayetteville 15K in Arkansas starting on Monday. Juniors Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez, rated No. 12 and No. 108 respectively in the ITA singles rankings and the nation's top doubles tandem, will be in action while freshman Niccolo Baroni and junior Mario Martinez Serrano are set to make their debuts with State.
Martinez Serrano, who transferred from Troy during the offseason, currently holds the No. 60 spot in the ITA singles rankings.
Sanchez Martinez starts things off for the Bulldogs on Monday at 10 a.m. representing his home country of Germany as he battles American Kartik Erodula, who was a senior at Trinity last year, in the singles qualifying draw. At the same time, MSU associate head coach Jake Jacoby breaks out his racket in his home state against fellow American Ishaan Ravichander in the first round of qualifying. Jacoby played collegiately at Iowa from 2014-18 and Ravichander finished his collegiate career at Columbia last spring.
Baroni, Jovanovic and Martinez Serrano all qualified for the main draw and will compete later in the week.
