#StateToTheShow: Malau’ulu, Spark Lead Way In Week 3
July 08, 2024 | Softball
STARKVILLE – Chloe Malau'ulu batted .400 last week as the Oklahoma City Spark won all six of their games. The former Mississippi State outfielder also launched her first home run of the season as part of a 2-for-3 day in a 7-0 win against the New York Rise.
It was a fitting week for Malau'ulu to take center stage as the Spark celebrated Luau Night on July 5, honoring Malau'ulu, Keilani Ricketts – MSU head coach Samantha Rickett's sister, Deja Mulipola and Tiare Jennings for their Samoan heritage.
In a 6-0 win against the Chattanooga Steam on July 3, Malau'ulu singled and scored. Against the Rise on Saturday, she singled in the second before launching a two-run homer in the fourth to make it a 4-0 ballgame. The following day she singled and stole a base for the first time this year.
Madisyn Kennedy's Florida Vibe played an exhibition against stars from the Florida Gulf Coast collegiate summer league on Saturday and had the chance to go head-to-head against her former teammate Kylee Edwards who has had a very successful summer. Kennedy doubled and scored in the contest. Edwards was hitless in the game, but she's batting .300 in the summer league with five doubles and three homers.
In WPF action, Brylie St. Clair and Aspen Wesley's Texas Monarchs played a tight series on the road at the Coastal Bend Tidal Wave. The Monarchs lost the first two games in walk-off fashion but rallied for a 4-1 victory in the series finale that was shortened by a drop-dead time.
Wesley started the middle game of the series, leaving the contest after 6.0 innings with a 5-3 lead. The Monarch bullpen couldn't preserve the lead however, allowing six runs to score in the bottom of the seventh. Wesley struck out five while walking just one.
St. Clair doubled to open the series and later drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in Game 1. She reached three times in the second game of the series, scoring twice after a single and two walks.
Professional softball in the United States consists of three different leagues. Two play with traditional, location-based teams, the Association of Fastpitch Professionals (AFP) and Women's Pro Fastpitch (WPF). Two Bulldogs are currently playing in each of these leagues. The third organization is Athletes Unlimited (AU), which does not have traditional teams. Instead, athletes compete as individuals earning fantasy sports style points. Teams are re-drafted by the leading players each week in Athletes Unlimited, where one Bulldog is active. AU begins play in late July.
