
Davidson-Smith, Team USA Win Silver At WBSC World Cup

CASTIONS DI STRADA, Italy – Mississippi State's Mia Davidson-Smith and the United States Women's National Team brought home a silver medal from the WBSC Women's Softball World Cup on Saturday.

The Americans lost just one game in the tournament, and it was the final, falling to Japan, 6-1. Team USA had allowed just two runs all tournament prior to the championship game and entered with a streak of 28.0 scoreless innings.

The world final was a rematch of 2018's final game, which saw Team USA defeat Japan, 7-6. The Americans also defeated Japan in the 2022 World Games final, taking home gold with a 3-2 victory. The Japanese team's last defeat of Team USA in a championship game came on home soil as Japan won gold at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 in a 2-0 ballgame.

Davidson-Smith played in two games in the tournament, starting one as the designated player. She went 0-for-4 in the tournament. When she started against China, she twice battled to full counts and appeared to have walked twice. Once she was called out on strikes on the inside corner, and once she was summoned back to the plate before she flew out to right field.

The former Bulldog All-American has played in four events with the national team selection. She also played with the Americans last summer, competing in Ireland at the WBSC World Cup Group Stage to qualify for the finals site. Last summer, she reached base in every plate appearance as Team USA posted a 4-0 record in Ireland.
