#StateToTheShow: Three Bulldogs Sweep In Week 2
July 01, 2024 | Softball
STARKVILLE – Three of Mississippi State's professional players led their teams to undefeated weeks in the second week of WPF and AFP action. Aspen Wesley and Brylie St. Clair's Texas Monarchs swept the Hub City Adelitas in a four-game series, while Madisyn Kennedy's Florida Vibe beat Team Mexico three times.
Â
Wesley starred for the Monarchs this week. She tossed her first professional complete game on Saturday night, allowing just one run while striking out four. The previous night saw her claim her first victory of the season in relief, retiring three of the four batters she faced in the seventh before the Monarchs won in walk-off fashion.
Â
The Philadelphia, Mississippi, native now leads the Monarchs with a 1.02 ERA and .211 opposing batting average across a team-high 20.2 innings pitched.
Â
St. Clair, meanwhile, sparked the Monarch offense out of the leadoff spot. On Thursday night, she singled, walked and scored, and on Friday, she scored twice after drawing a pair of walks and stealing a base. She is now tied for fifth on the team with a .333 on-base percentage and she extended her reached-base streak to five games before it came to an end on Sunday.
Â
The Vibe and the Oklahoma City Spark turned their attention to international competition this week as members of the AFP. Kennedy and the Vibe outscored Team Mexico, 38-0, in their three-game series. State's All-American reached base and scored in all three games, extending her streak to four consecutive contests. In the series finale, Kennedy collected an RBI double and a two-run single.
Â
Chloe Malau'ulu and the Spark played a pair of games each against Team Great Britain and Team USA. Malau'ulu tripled and came around to score an insurance run in the fourth inning of OKC's 2-0 series-opening victory.
Â
Professional softball in the United States consists of three different leagues. Two play with traditional, location-based teams, the Association of Fastpitch Professionals (AFP) and Women's Pro Fastpitch (WPF). Two Bulldogs are currently playing in each of these leagues. The third organization is Athletes Unlimited (AU), which does not have traditional teams. Instead, athletes compete as individuals earning fantasy sports style points. Teams are re-drafted by the leading players each week in Athletes Unlimited, where one Bulldog is active. AU begins play in late July.
