STARKVILLE – For the second consecutive offseason, Mississippi State has signed a multi-year first team all-conference performer out of the transfer portal.
After bringing in Dusan Milanovic a year ago, the Bulldogs hope to have similar success with the signing of Mario Martinez Serrano. Martinez Serrano has been a first team All-Sun Belt selection in each of the past two seasons at Troy.
The rising junior from Zaragoza, Spain compiled a 43-5 dual match singles record during his career with the Trojans while playing all but one match at the No. 1 position. Martinez Serrano led the Sun Belt with a 23-2 record in singles and a 20-5 mark in doubles as a sophomore this past season.
Martinez Serrano is also a two-time Sun Belt Player to Watch, the 2023 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and the 2023 ITA Southern Region Rookie of the Year. For his efforts in the classroom, he recently earned Academic All-District by the College Sports Communicators by maintaining a 3.69 grade point average while majoring in physical education.
"Mario's record and results speak for themselves with what he has accomplished so far," said MSU assistant coach Jake Jacoby. "What is more exciting for us is that we are gaining someone with a relentless work ethic and hunger to improve and compete at every chance he gets. Mario is going to fit and enhance our culture immediately on and off the court. We are incredibly excited to have him join our Bulldog family and attack our goals together."
Overall, Martinez Serrano is 58-11 in singles play during his college career with a 12-3 mark in conference play. He has also found success in doubles with a 35-17 record which includes a 20-5 clip during a sophomore campaign which saw him go 7-1 in Sun Belt action.
Martinez Serrano was ranked as highly as 71st in singles this past spring and finished the season ranked No. 119. He holds a UTR rating of 13.1.
