#StateToTheShow: Kennedy, St. Clair, Wesley Make Pro Debuts
June 25, 2024 | Softball
STARKVILLE – Welcome to the Show indeed. Four former Mississippi State softball players began their professional seasons last week, with three making their pro debuts.
Â
Chloe Malau'ulu's Oklahoma City Spark went undefeated through pool play at the AFP's Scenic City Pro Cup before losing the championship game to the New York Rise. Malau'ulu collected four hits in four games, including a 2-for-4 day against the host Chattanooga Steam.
Â
Madisyn Kennedy and the Florida Vibe got out to a slow start in the tournament but battled back to win their final two games and place third. Kennedy was a big piece in the consolation game victory, hitting her first professional homer and delivering a sacrifice fly.
Â
Kennedy and Malau'ulu went head-to-head in pool play on Thursday night. While the Vibe got out to an early 6-0 lead, the Spark broke up the no-hitter with a solo homer in the fourth and didn't stop scoring, rallying back for an 8-6 victory. Kennedy collected her first pro hit in the game, reaching base three times with a walk and two singles.
Â
Meanwhile in WPF action, Brylie St. Clair and Aspen Wesley made their professional debuts as teammates with the Texas Monarchs. St. Clair singled in a pinch-hitting appearance on Opening Day for her professional hit. Wesley debuted the following day, tossing 4.0 shutout innings while allowing just two hits and recording her first strikeout.
Â
The Monarchs lost their series at the Texas Smoke but salvaged the final game to avoid a sweep. On Saturday night, the teams went 13 innings before the Smoke claimed an 8-7 walk-off victory. St. Clair reached base twice in the Monarchs' win, singling up the middle and drawing a walk.
Â
Professional softball in the United States consists of three different leagues. Two play with traditional, location-based teams, the Association of Fastpitch Professionals (AFP) and Women's Pro Fastpitch (WPF). Two Bulldogs are currently playing in each of these leagues. The third organization is Athletes Unlimited (AU), which does not have traditional teams. Instead, athletes compete as individuals earning fantasy sports style points. Teams are re-drafted by the leading players each week in Athletes Unlimited, where one Bulldog is active. AU begins play in late July.
