June 16, 2024 | Men's Golf
BALLYLIFFIN, Ireland – A trio of Mississippi State golfers are set to tee off at The Amateur Championship on Monday in Ballyliffin, Ireland. Harrison Davis, Josep Serra and recent signee Ugo Malcor will represent State at the 129th Amateur Championship.
Â
Hosted by The R&A, The Amateur Championship is one of the biggest and most prestigious amateur championships in the world. The first edition was held in 1885 at Haylake with 44 players. The tournament now consists of a field of 288 golfers competing in stroke play before advancing to match play.
Â
Winning the tournament secures an exemption into The Open and the U.S. Open and, by tradition, includes an invitation to play in the Masters.
Â
Malcor kicks things off for State, teeing off at 7:29 a.m. local time (1:29 a.m. CT) on the Galshedy Links course. Davis follows him at 8:13 a.m. local time. Serra will play in the afternoon, leaving the clubhouse at 3:04 p.m. local time (9:04 a.m. CT).
Â
The golfers will play their second round on the Ballyliffin Old Course on Tuesday. Serra starts things off that day at 10:30 a.m. local time, followed by Malcor at 12:03 p.m. and Davis at 12:47 p.m.
Â
In order to compete, golfers must have been amateurs ranked among the top 2,000 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) or hold a handicap of 1.5 or less. Serra leads the State trio with a WAGR ranking of No. 563.
Â
Following two stroke play rounds, the top 64 golfers will advance to match play on Wednesday, June 19. The second and third rounds of match play will take place on Thursday, and the quarterfinals and semifinals would be played on Friday. The final will consist of 36 holes and be contested on Saturday to conclude the event.
