State To Host Pitt In SEC-ACC Challenge
June 12, 2024 | Men's Basketball
STARKVILLE -- Mississippi State will host Pitt on Dec. 4 at Humphrey Coliseum as part of the 2024 SEC-ACC Men's Basketball Challenge, the Southeastern Conference announced Wednesday.
It will be the third ever meeting between the two schools. The Bulldogs won the inaugural matchup in Pittsburgh during the 2000-01 season, 66-61. Pitt edged the Bulldogs 60-59 in a back-and-forth First Four game at the NCAA Tournament in 2023.
State will enter the 2024-25 season fresh off consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament. Head coach Chris Jans, who signed a new contact on May 20 through the 2027-28 season, has led the Bulldogs to 21 wins in both of his seasons. He's 42-27 overall and the back-to-back NCAA appearances are MSU's first since reaching the 2008 and 2009 NCAA Tournaments.
In eight seasons as a head coach at three different Division I schools, Jans boasts a career record of 185-71 and five NCAA Tournament trips. (He led a 25-win team at New Mexico State that won the WAC regular-season title the season that COVID-19 cancelled the NCAA tournament.)
Humphrey Coliseum was one of the most electric environments in college basketball this past season, featuring seven sellouts – the most on record in a season dating back to 2008-09 – including four in a row.
