May 20, 2024 | Men's Tennis
STILLWATER, Okla., - Mississippi State's 11th-ranked doubles tandem of Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez are set to take the courts on Tuesday at the NCAA Individual Championships.
The Bulldog duo will battle Harvard's 19th-ranked team of Daniel Milavsky and Cooper Williams at approximately 5 p.m. at the Greenwood Tennis Center on the campus of Oklahoma State.
Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez have posted an impressive 22-10 record together this year, which is tied for the eighth-most wins in a single season at MSU with Louis Cant and Malte Strop (2012). The sophomore pairing needs one more win to match Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic's record together from the 2019 campaign for seventh all-time in school history.
Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez have already knocked off 10 ranked opponents, four of which were ranked in the nation's top 20 at the time of the match.
The NCAA Singles Championships began on Monday with a pair of Bulldogs competing. Jovanovic – who is ranked 48th in singles – fell 6-1, 6-3 to Oregon's No. 67 Quinn Vandecasteele while No. 47 Nemanja Malesevic saw his storied collegiate career come to a close following a 6-3, 6-2 loss to fourth-ranked Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc of Florida State.
Jovanovic concludes his stellar season in singles where he posted a team-high 28 victories. The first team All-SEC performer defeated nine ranked foes during the year and won the singles consolation bracket at the ITA Fall National Championships.
Malesevic departs with his name littered throughout the MSU record books. The three-time All-SEC selection is tied with Laurent Miquelard (1992-95) for the seventh-most dual match wins with 106. His 60 career dual match singles victories also rank ninth in school history.
