
Strong Start For Bulldogs In Opening Round of SEC Championship

BELLEAIR, Fla. – Mississippi State women's golf concluded its first round of the 2023 SEC Championship on Friday at the Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Fla. The Bulldogs shot an even par as a team in the opening round, led by a pair of under-par finishes from Julia Lopez Ramirez and Avery Weed, to finish the day in fourth place.

The duo of Lopez Ramirez and Weed had a solid start to their SEC Championship. Both shot 3-under par and tied for second overall after 18 holes. Lopez Ramirez and Weed are two of just 19 golfers to shoot under par in the opening round.

Lopez Ramirez, the reigning SEC Individual Champion, made three birdies and an eagle on Friday. After shooting a 67, she now has 32 career rounds of golf in the 60s, including four at the SEC Championships. Her 67 ties her career low at the SEC Championship, last set in 2022.

Weed, who earned a team-high four birdies, had a career-best opening round with her 3-under par 67 on Friday. The freshman from Ocean Springs improved upon her previous best round by two strokes, which she set at the Annika Intercollegiate. Weed earned her second career round in the 60s while helping the Bulldogs conclude the first day of the championship in fourth.

Rounding out the scoring for State on Friday were Surapa Janthamunee (+2), Chiara Horder (+4) and Izzy Pellott (+6).

Mississippi State will start the second round on Saturday at 7:20 a.m. CT and be paired with Arkansas. The Bulldogs will tee off in 10-minute increments, starting with Pellott, Horder, Janthamunee, Weed and Lopez Ramirez.

The final two days of the SEC Championship will be broadcast live. Monday's quarter and semifinals matchup will be transmitted on SECN+, while Tuesday's finals will be broadcasted on SECN.
