March 27, 2024 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's Petar Jovanovic was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week on Wednesday.
Jovanovic was a driving force in the Bulldogs' 4-3 road victories at No. 16 South Carolina and No. 33 Florida last week, securing a pair of singles wins and a doubles triumph.
Jovanovic – along with partner Benito Sanchez Martinez – helped MSU claim the doubles point in dominant fashion against the Gamecock's 19th-ranked tandem of Casey Hoole and Toby Samuel 6-1. He then tied the match 3-3 with his 6-4, 6-4 singles victory over No. 105 Hoole to spearhead the Bulldogs' comeback at South Carolina on the final court.
The sophomore from Podgorica, Montenegro also notched a singles win over Florida's Aidan Kim 6-2, 6-2 that gave State its first lead against the Gators.
Jovanovic leads the Bulldogs with 23 singles wins this season and sports a 5-2 singles mark during dual match play. He also tops the team with five ranked singles wins and has six ranked doubles wins among his team-leading 17 doubles triumphs with Sanchez Martinez.
Jovanovic is the second Mississippi State player to be selected as SEC Player of the Week this season, joining Nemanja Malesevic. It is the fourth weekly conference honor for Jovanovic after being tabbed as the SEC Freshman of the Week three times last spring en route to earning a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team.
