February 07, 2024 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's Jayna Clemens was selected as the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week on Wednesday.
Clemens was instrumental in helping the Bulldogs remain the SEC's only undefeated team by picking up four total wins in victories against UAB, Jackson State and Belmont over the weekend.
The Lewisville, Texas native remains unbeaten in singles during dual match play and earned three singles wins this past week. She won all three matches in straights sets, outscored her opponents 36-13 and was also the first singles competitor to finish a full match in all three contests.
Clemens defeated UAB's Enya Ratkic 6-4, 6-2 and Jackson State's Chiara Desia 6-3, 6-1 as part of a doubleheader on Saturday. She also downed Hana Sokolovic of Belmont 6-2, 6-1 on Sunday.
In doubles, Clemens teamed with Maria Rizzolo to take down the Jackson State tandem of Isabela Benavides and Zofia Dziewiecka 6-4.
Clemens is the first Bulldog to be named SEC Freshman of the Week since Chloé Cirotte claimed that honor twice in 2021. She is 13th player and the ninth freshman to earn an SEC weekly honor under Chris Hooshyar and the first from MSU.
Clemens and the Bulldogs return to action at Memphis on Sunday at noon.
