Wilson Named SEC Freshman Of The Week
February 07, 2024 | Men's Golf
BIRMINGHAM, Ala.– Mississippi State's Drew Wilson has been named the SEC Freshman Golfer of the Week after finishing tied for third at the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate.
Â
Wilson shot a 7-under 209 in his collegiate debut and was the highest placing freshman in the field. He was named to the Thomas Sharkey Individual Collegiate All-Tournament Team for his efforts.
Â
"I'm really proud of Drew and how he played in his debut," head coach Dusty Smith said. "He has been committed to his process and his buy-in to this program. It was great to see him take advantage of a great opportunity this past weekend."
Â
The Potts Camp, Mississippi, native shot a career-low 65 in the second round, which is tied for the lowest round by a Bulldog this season. It is also the third-lowest round by an SEC freshman this year. Along the way, Wilson carded his first career eagle to add to five birdies in the round. He was bogey-free over the 18 holes.
Â
Wilson followed that round with a 2-under showing in the final round, while carding six birdies.
Â
His recognition marks the fourth time since the start of the 2022-23 season that a Bulldog men's golfer has earned an SEC weekly honor. He is the third Freshman of the Week selection in that span, joining now sophomore Garrett Endicott who won the recognition twice last season.
