Every Victory Means More

STARKVILLE – Building a culture filled with unbreakable bonds and undeniable chemistry takes celebrating each victory on the road to success.
That is exactly what Mississippi State softball has established with its postgame Polaroid photo after each win. The melting pot of exuberant personalities in the Maroon and White this season took the victory photo and ran with it when associate head coach Tyler Bratton first pitched the idea.
"One thing about our team is that they are never shy of the camera. You get a chance to get a team photo and they're all about it," Bratton said.
The origin of the postgame photoshoot stemmed after a win from the first weekend of the season, in which the Bulldogs outscored opponents 36-2 en route to a 4-0 start in 2024.
As creative as the photos sometimes get, the value behind each one means much more.
"It's just a symbol of, 'Hey, that game is over, and let's get ready for the next game,'" Bratton said. "We're going to celebrate each one along the way because they're all big in the grand scheme of things. Each game is big to get you where you want to go."
And what is a postgame victory photoshoot without a photographer?
Director of softball operations Jamie Desporte picked up a Polaroid and 70 pieces of film to take the pictures for the Bulldogs after each win. After that, she was officially assigned the role of postgame photographer.
"I went and bought the Polaroid and it was in my backpack, so I was just assigned to take the picture after the games," Desporte said. "I bought 70 Polaroid pictures and when I did the math, if you win 71 games you win the World Series completely undefeated, so we can only lose one. We've gotten that out of the way, and now, we got enough to win throughout the rest of the season."
Even with a few lighting issues, Desporte and the team have embraced this opportunity to capture all memories made throughout the season.
"They were excited because, you know, Polaroids are cute, fun and exciting," Desporte said. "I wish we would have taken more on the beach or whatever, but again, we're winning games in the day and night."
As State ventures through the rest of 2024, the Bulldogs aim to celebrate every accomplishment and never take a memory for granted.
"I think as coaches a lot of times we dwell on what we could have done better or maybe we should have beat that team or maybe we didn't play our best that game," Bratton said. "It's important to celebrate each win along the way and let the rest of it take care of itself. It's not meant to be in your face, it's just one step of a season-long journey."
