Mississippi State Soccer Set to Kick Off Spring Season with Doubleheader
February 23, 2024 | Soccer
STARKVILLE –The anticipation is palpable as Mississippi State soccer gears up to commence its spring season with an exciting doubleheader on Saturday at the MSU Soccer Field.
The action-packed day will feature Mississippi State taking on West Alabama in the opening match at noon. Following what promises to be an intense encounter, West Alabama and William Carey will battle it out at 2 PM. Rounding out the doubleheader, the Bulldogs will then go head-to-head against William Carey at 3:30 PM to complete the round-robin schedule.
The West Alabama Tigers wrapped up their previous season with a 7-9-2 record under the guidance of Head Coach Sam Wilson in his first year at the helm. The Tigers' season was highlighted by a historic win in the GSC Quarterfinals, where they stunned the competition by defeating the number one seed West Florida Argos. This victory marked a significant milestone in GSC Championship history, as the Tigers became the first eight seed ever to advance to the next round, showcasing their potential as a formidable force on the field.
On the other side of the pitch, Mississippi State's second opponent of the day, William Carey University Lady Raiders, had an outstanding season in 2023, falling just short in the NAIA Women's National Tournament championship game with an impressive 24-1-0 record. Over the past three seasons, William Carey has consistently excelled, making two appearances in the NAIA Women's Championship game and boasting a combined record of 62-5-2 during that timeframe.
Head Coach James Armstrong and the Mississippi State squad have been diligently preparing for this moment, eager to showcase their skills and teamwork on the field. With a rigorous training regimen and unwavering determination, the Bulldogs are primed to make a statement in their first matches of the season.
Coach Armstrong highlighted the importance of the upcoming spring matchups, expressing, "These fixtures play a pivotal role in our program's growth. They offer a chance for emerging players to step onto the field and gain valuable experience. Spring is about development and opportunity particularly when playing versus such quality opposition."
Fans are encouraged to come out and support the team as they embark on their spring campaign. The MSU Soccer Field will play host to Saturday's festivities where admission is free of charge.
