Weed Earns SEC Freshman of the Week Honor
February 21, 2024 | Women's Golf
STARKVILLE – For the first time in her career, Avery Weed was named SEC Freshman of the Week, the Southeastern Conference announced on Wednesday.
Â
Weed earned the freshman of the week honor based on her play at the Nexus Collegiate Invitational last week. She finished the tournament as runner-up with a score of 1-under par.
Â
Out of the 66-player field, only five golfers finished the tournament under-par. Out of those five, Weed was the only freshman.
Â
The second-place finish marked Weed's best finish in a collegiate tournament and her first finish in the top five. This also marked the best finish for a freshman in program history since 2022, when Julia Lopez Ramirez earned an individual victory at the Westbrook Invitational (Feb. 28).
Â
Weed is the fifth Bulldog to earn the honor of being called SEC Freshman of the Week. This also marks the first time a Bulldog earned the honor since Izzy Pellot did nearly a year ago (Feb. 22).
Â
Mississippi State will return to the course on March 4 for the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.
