February 14, 2024 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's Nemanja Malesevic was named the SEC Player of the Week by the league office on Wednesday.
Malesevic contributed three wins to the Bulldogs' 3-0 showing last week including the match-clincher in Sunday's victory over VCU. Both of his victories in singles came at the No. 1 position and improved him to 3-0 atop the lineup this year.
The 6-foot-2 senior defeated VCU's 36th-ranked Matisse Bobichon 6-1, 7-6(6) to take down his second top 50 opponent in nine days and earned the 18th ranked singles win of his career. It was also the second match Malesevic has clinched this season and the 19th of his career.
Malesevic returned from injury last Friday and outlasted former MSU teammate Jonas Hartenstein of North Florida 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. He also teamed with a pair of freshmen in doubles last week and claimed a 6-2 victory alongside Roberto Ferrer Guimaraes over VCU's Hamza El Amine and Tristan Piombo to help the Bulldogs secure their first doubles point since Jan. 19.
The two-time All-SEC selection from Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina has won six of his last seven singles matches and sports a 6-4 singles record and a 7-5 doubles mark for the year.
It is the first SEC Player of the Week accolade for Malesevic and also the first for the Bulldogs since Florian Broska was awarded the honor in 2021.
State is off this week and will return to action at Tulane on Feb. 25.
