Nick Barr-Mira Named to SEC Community Service Team
December 05, 2024 | Football
STARKVILLE – On Wednesday, the Southeastern Conference announced the Community Service Team for football, with punter/kicker Nick Barr-Mira earning the honor for Mississippi State.
Â
The SEC names a Community Service Team for each of its 22-league sponsored sports, looking to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to his community through superior service efforts.
Â
Barr-Mira, a native of Palos Verdes, Calif., has been one of the Mississippi State locker room leaders when it comes to giving back to the community. Since coming to Starkville before the start of the 2023 season, Barr-Mira has participated in numerous community service events.
Â
The newly created D.A.W.G. program has allowed Barr-Mira to participate in community service events such as Read Across America, Ryan's Giving Tree, the Emily Chancellor Polar Bear Plunge, a school service trip to Miami, Habitat for Humanity and multiple trips to Overstreet Elementary School District just to name a few.
Â
Barr-Mira and his family even created a non-profit called 'Raise The Barr,' which is dedicated to providing aid to single-parent students and their children in Minnesota (where Nick's brother Anthony spent eight years starring as a linebacker for the Minnesota Vikings) and in the Barrs' home area in southern California. The organization provides its participants, known as scholars, with programming that includes financial assistance, community building, and professional and personal development, with the goal set of well-being for the entire family.
Â
Earlier this season, Barr-Mira was one of 111 FBS players to be nominated for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team while also being named to the watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy. Both honors highlight community service and willingness to give back to others.
