The Final Horn: No. 25 State 80, UNLV 58
November 28, 2024 | Men's Basketball, Joel Coleman
A quick rundown of MSU’s win over the Runnin’ Rebels.
THE BOTTOM LINE: After needing to pull off double-digit comebacks in each of the last two games, No. 25 Mississippi State's sixth straight win to start the season came with a little less drama. MSU completely controlled UNLV on Thursday night as the Bulldogs rolled to an 80-58 victory over the Runnin' Rebels at the Arizona Tip-Off in Tempe. UNLV scored eight of the game's first 10 points, but less than two minutes after the Rebels took their early 8-2 edge, Josh Hubbard nailed a 3-pointer that put the Dawgs up 11-10 and State led the rest of the way. For most of the evening, MSU's lead was double figures. The Bulldogs went up 29-17 with 9:57 left in the first half and the State advantage never got below 10 points again. State went on to lead by as many as 28 points as the Maroon and White coasted to the triumph.
KEY NUMBERS: MSU's early shooting from long distance laid the foundation for the victory. The Bulldogs made seven of their first 11 3-pointers to account for 21 of their first 39 points. By the time RJ Melendez nailed the seventh of those triples with 5:30 left in the opening period, State was up 39-21 and well on the way to the win. MSU was also boosted by dominating the glass. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Running' Rebels 46-29, including hauling down 19 offensive boards that led to 30 second-chance points. And once again, the Bulldog bench was simply fantastic. A total of 48 of State's points came from its reserves with 14 of those scored by KeShawn Murphy, who continues to show he is one of the country's most well-rounded players. In addition to his 14 points, Murphy brought down 13 rebounds, had four assists, plus a block and a steal. Hubbard was the lone other Bulldog to score more than 10 points as the electric sophomore totaled 11. Incredibly, 14 different State players accounted for at least one point.
