November 19, 2024 | Men's Tennis
WACO, Texas – A pair of Mississippi State tandems will be in action to open the NCAA Doubles Championships on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs are one of only four programs to have two doubles teams qualify for NCAAs and the only school from the Southeastern Conference to do so.
No. 1 Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez will vie for their 15th career ranked win together as they take on Cal's 13th-ranked team of Alex Chang and Michael Wright at 6 p.m. Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez have posted a 9-2 record this fall including a pair of ranked victories.
Niccolo Baroni and Mario Martinez Serrano will also be in action on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 against Indiana's 52nd-ranked duo of Jip Van Assendelft and Facundo Yunis. It'll be the second-straight tournament Baroni and Martinez Serrano have squared off against that particular pair of Hoosiers. They also met Van Assendelft and Yunis in the semifinals of the ITA South Sectional Championships in Tallahassee, Florida on Nov. 9.
Three members of MSU's doubles teams started NCAA play at the Hurd Tennis Center in singles on Tuesday but came up short in their bids to advance beyond the opening round. No. 12 Jovanovic was edged by 33rd-ranked Braden Shick of NC State 7-6(4), 6-3, No. 107 Sanchez Martinez dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision to Princeton's 11th-ranked Paul Inchauspe and Baroni fell to 82nd-ranked Jamie Connel of Florida State 6-1, 6-4.
