No. 1 Jovanovic, Sanchez Martinez Win Inaugural ITA Conference Masters Championship
November 10, 2024 | Men's Tennis
ROME, Ga. – Mississippi State's top-ranked doubles tandem of Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez took home some hardware from the inaugural ITA Conference Masters Championships on Sunday.
Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez downed Notre Dame's 46th-ranked duo of Sebastian Dominko and Peter Nad 7-5, 7-6(4) in the championship finale at the Rome Tennis Center. The Bulldogs' junior duo posted a perfect 4-0 record together during the event and did not drop a single set during the weekend.
"Pete and Benito were very locked in this week on the practice court and in the matches," said head coach Matt Roberts. "It's great to win, but more importantly we are seeing a lot of improvement from the key areas we have been drilling in practice. After regionals, we knew we had a lot of work to do, which would allow us to have more variety depending on our opponents' tendencies. This tournament was a great way to apply the hard work and adjustments we have been working on in practice."
Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez along with teammate Niccolo Baroni qualified to compete in both singles and doubles at the NCAA Individual Championships in Waco, Texas from Nov. 19-24. Baroni will team with doubles partner Mario Martinez Serrano during that tournament.
"We're excited to get to play more tennis at NCAAs in Waco and hope to keep enjoying the process of improving," Roberts said.
Final selections for the NCAA Individual Championships will be made on Monday with the brackets being revealed on Nov. 16.
