Coleman Has A Winning Mindset
November 01, 2024 | Football
MSU receiver has been strong statistically but is only focused on helping his team towards victory.
STARKVILLE – Kevin Coleman Jr. is having a breakout campaign for Mississippi State.
Â
The junior receiver is a threat every time he touches the ball. He leads the Bulldogs in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown catches. He has been the leader in a talented group of pass catchers.
Â
The stats, however, are not important to Coleman. He puts team over self. He wants wins.
Â
"I'm blessed to improve from last year and have great stats, but I care about winning," Coelman said. "The guys on this team have a winning mindset. I see no stats right now."
Â
The Bulldogs have shown growth throughout the season. It's a positive sign for the future, and Coleman is working to turn close games into wins.
Â
"We've been making progress," Coleman said. "We've had big games and played Texas close and Georgia close, but we're not trying to play close. We're just trying to win."
Â
Coleman has been impressed with many of his freshman teammates, particularly his quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. His "swagger and confidence" have been apparent from day one.
Â
"He's gone out there with confidence from the jump," Coleman said. "His confidence is getting high, and he's becoming more and more of a leader. That's what we need from him. He knew from day one that he could play early. That was always his goal, to prepare for now and not later."
Â
As the leader of the MSU receiving corps, Coleman sees promise in all his teammates. Freshman Ricky Johnson snagged a big fourth-down catch last week against Arkansas, and he is one of many examples of the depth at the receiver position.
Â
"I have confidence in any guy we have on the field," Coleman said. "Freshman or whoever. Since Ricky stepped into the building, we knew what kind of guy he is. He just needed the opportunity. It's not surprising to us because he does it at practice. How you practice is going to show up in the game."
Â
Coleman and the Bulldogs look to get back in the win column Saturday against UMass at Davis Wade Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:15 p.m.
