State Soccer Achieves Highest Rankings In Program History
October 08, 2024 | Soccer
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State soccer continues to make history in 2024, earning its highest rankings ever across multiple national polls. The Bulldogs are now ranked No. 4 by both United Soccer Coaches and TopDrawerSoccer, and have reached No. 3 in the NCAA's RPI rankings.
After a strong start to the season, State's rise in the rankings reflects the program's consistent performance on the pitch, building on the momentum from back-to-back 10-win seasons under head coach James Armstrong. The Bulldogs' stellar defensive play and ability to secure marquee wins have solidified their place among the nation's elite in 2024. These accolades come on the heels of a historic week for the Bulldogs, which also saw two players earn Southeastern Conference Player of the Week honors for their performances in a 1-0 victory over then top-ranked Arkansas.
Ally Perry, named SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week, leads the conference in shots per game (4.64) and ranks second in total shots with 51. On the national level, Perry ranks 11th in the NCAA in shots per game, making her the only SEC player in the top 25. She has also been clutch for the Bulldogs, currently ranking fifth in the SEC with 0.64 goals per game. Her Olimpico goal in the 19th minute—scored directly from a corner kick—proved to be the game-winner in the victory over Arkansas. With seven goals and four game-winners already this season, Perry's consistency has been a key factor in Mississippi State's rise.
On the defensive side, Maddy Anderson earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Anderson recorded her 34th career shutout, holding the Razorbacks scoreless for the first time this season. Anderson now leads the SEC in goals-against average (0.19) and save percentage (.920). Anderson and the collective defensive leadership has been pivotal for State as they are the only team yet to allow a goal in SEC play. The defensive efforts have contributed to the Bulldogs' nation-leading goals-against average (0.182) and the second-best save percentage (.920) in the country.Â
No. 4 Mississippi State looks to continue its historic season as they head to Athens to take on Georgia on Thursday at 5:30Â p.m. CT.Â
