MSU Scores Four Main Draw Wins

AUBURN, Ala. – Mississippi State picked up four main draw wins on the second day of the ITA Southern Regional Championships on Friday.
Emma Cohen and Gianna Oboniye began the day by defeating Tulane's duo of Delaine Tribby and Jiayun Zhu 8-5 in the first round of doubles action. Oboniye carried her momentum over to the opening round of singles later in the afternoon where the freshman earned her first career singles win over LSU's Kenna Erickson 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.
Chiara Di Genova, who transferred in from Florida State during the offseason, also collected her first singles victory for the Bulldogs by rallying past Erica Hagi of McNeese State 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in the opening round of singles action. Prior to her singles win, Di Genova teamed up with senior Maria Rizzolo to knock off Auburn's duo of Julie Bedard and Natalie Outcalt 8-4 on their home court in the second round of doubles. The win advances the pair to the round of 16 and marks Rizzolo's first doubles victory of the fall.
MSU returns to action on Saturday where Di Genova and Rizzolo are set to face Tulane's Ricci Campbell and Leigh Van Zyl in the doubles round of 16 beginning at 9:00 a.m. In the second round of singles, Oboniye squares off against 32nd-ranked DJ Bennett of Auburn at 10:30 a.m. and Di Genova takes on Ole Miss' Anaelle Leclercq-Ficher at 11:45 a.m.
Three other Bulldogs will also be in action in the opening round of singles consolation. At 10:30 a.m., Rizzolo takes on Sara Erenda of Samford and Jayna Clemens squares off against Louisiana Tech's Ana Rodrigues. Freshman Carolina Troiano also faces UAB's Klara Kajabova at 1:30 p.m.
