Â
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Mississippi State's Josh Hubbard came away with his third SEC Freshman of the Week award announced Monday by the conference office.
Â
For Hubbard, he's the second State player to earn at least a trio of SEC Freshman weekly honors. The only other player in program history to accomplish the feat is Jamont Gordon who won the award four times during the 2005-06 season.
Â
Hubbard amassed 21.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game as the Bulldogs earned another top 10 victory over No. 8 Auburn. It marked the first time that State has earned two wins over Associated Press Top 10 squads during the same season since 2001-02.
Â
Hubbard was instrumental and made the most of his first career start with 15 of his game-leading 17 points during the second half versus Auburn. He drained a trio of critical three-pointers, the last a late shot clock inbounds play with 1:37 remaining, to stretch State's lead from 55-54 to 58-54.
Â
Hubbard began his week with a SEC season's best 26 points at Florida which marked his fifth effort of 20-plus points off the bench, the most for a State player in a single season going back to 1989-90.
Â
For the season, Hubbard has racked up 298 points, which is fifth-most for a State freshman through 20 games and the most since Rickey Brown (1976-77). He has provided 16 of his 17 outings in double figures off the bench which are tied for second-most among State players dating back to the 1989-90 season.
Â
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Hubbard is one of two Power 6 freshmen players (ACC, BIG EAST, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC) to average at least 14.5 points per game with a minimum of 15 games off the bench going back to 2005-06.
Â
Mississippi State is one of three SEC programs (Auburn, Tennessee) and one of 29 programs nationally to earn at least six combined NCAA NET Quad 1 and Quad 2 wins on the season. The Bulldogs are one of the few programs nationally to collect a pair of wins over Associated Press Top 10 opponents this season. Â
Â
UP NEXT
The Bulldogs are in the midst of another four consecutive NCAA NET Quad 1 contests and are the only school in the country to play eight of their first nine conference games as quad 1 opportunities.
Â
State renews its rivalry with Ole Miss on Tuesday in Oxford. Tip time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT televised by SEC Network and available online courtesy of the ESPN app.
