No. 12 MSU Wraps Up ITA Kickoff Weekend

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State earned a 6-1 victory over then 20th-ranked Florida State inside the Rula Tennis Pavilion on Jan. 19.
Nine days later, however, it would be the now No. 25 Seminoles that evened the season series following a 4-1 win against the 12th-ranked Bulldogs in Sunday's consolation match of ITA Kickoff Weekend.
Tournament host MSU (4-2) fell behind early after dropping the doubles point for the second-straight day. No. 52 Loris Pourroy and Youcef Pourroy took down the Bulldog tandem of Carles Hernandez and Dusan Milanovic 6-2. FSU clinched the point as Alex Bulte and Azariah Rusher outlasted Marshall Landry and Nemanja Malesevic in a tiebreaker 7-6(3).
The Bulldogs were able to briefly even the score as Sanchez Martinez was the first singles match to finish as the sophomore surpassed Joshua Dous-Karpenschif in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
The Seminoles regained the lead as Bulte overcame Radomir Tomic 6-3, 6-4. An extremely rare code violation cost Mississippi State on Court 1 as a second-set tiebreaker for No. 13 Petar Jovanovic abruptly ended his match against Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc. Cornut-Chauvinc put Florida State ahead 3-1 after his 6-2, 7-6(3) triumph.
Pourroy clinched things for the now 4-2 Seminoles following a three-set battle with Milanovic. Milanovic took the first set 6-2 but the Mississippi State southpaw fell in the next two 6-3, 7-5 to close out a six-match homestand for the Bulldogs.
Arizona State advanced to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in New York City following its 4-2 win over VCU in the ITA Kickoff Championship match on Sunday afternoon.
Next up for MSU is a pair of road trips to the Volunteer State. The Bulldogs will battle Middle Tennessee in Murfreesboro on Friday at 5 p.m. before trekking to Memphis to take on the Tigers on Feb. 7.
