Â
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – Mississippi State's Josh Hubbard tucked away his second SEC Freshman of the Week award announced Monday by the conference office.
Â
For Hubbard, he is the eighth State player to earn multiple SEC freshman weekly honors. Most recently, Reggie Perry (2018-19) and Quinndary Weatherspoon (2015-16) accomplished the feat for the Maroon and White.
Â
Hubbard piled up 19.5 points fueled by seven three-pointers for the week. He pumped in a SEC-best 25 points, his second-highest scoring output on the season, versus No. 5 Tennessee. The Tennessee triumph marked State's first win over an Associated Press Top 5 opponent since 2002-03.
Â
For the season, Hubbard has amassed 241 points, which is fifth-most for a State freshman through 16 games and the most since Rickey Brown (1976-77). His 14 games in double figures off the bench are tied for fourth-most among State players dating back to the 1989-90 season.
Â
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Hubbard is the only Power 6 freshmen player (ACC, BIG EAST, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC) to average at least 15.0 points per game with a minimum of 15 games off the bench going back to 2005-06.
Â
Mississippi State is one of three SEC programs (Auburn, Tennessee) and one of 26 programs nationally to earn at least five combined NCAA NET Quad 1 and Quad 2 wins on the season. The Bulldogs also are joined by Memphis as the only programs with at least four non-conference wins over Power 5 opponents on road/neutral floors in 2023-24. Â
Â
UP NEXT
The Bulldogs travel to No. 8 Kentucky for their fourth consecutive NCAA NET Quad 1 contest to open SEC action. Wednesday's tip time is slated for 6 p.m. CT televised by ESPN2 and available online courtesy of the ESPN app.
