Corry's Corner - September 2023
September 18, 2023 | Women's Basketball
This has been a rigorous month for our coaching staff. The NCAA has allotted 30 days during September as "contact" days. These are days in which our Recruiting Coaches and Head Coach can visit senior prospective student-athletes' schools to watch them participate in workouts. In addition, we can host recruits on campus for official and unofficial visits. It is a busy month for recruiting, and at the same time, our current student-athletes are on campus attending school and completing preseason workouts.
For us, this is our training camp. It is a period for our players to participate in intensive conditioning and basketball workouts while establishing their academic foundations for the semester. Their weekdays consist of weights, conditioning, basketball, school, homework, recovery, eating and self-care. Their weekends include hosting recruits, attending athletic events and enjoying college life in StarkVegas.
Separation is an obstacle if the goal is to become ONE. However, it is an obstacle as a program we have faced, as we always do - head on. Through the use of technology, we are able to communicate while we are apart. Due to having an unbelievable staff, we can provide our student-athletes with experiences that focus on quality and growth.
Personally, I have been traveling for the majority of every week this month. Having attended only a few of our workouts enables me to witness our growth. Are we communicating more on the court? Are our point guards controlling the tempo? Are we using words of encouragement when we pass the ball? Are we picking our teammates up? Are we doing the little things we have stressed since joining in June?
The answer is yes.
Training camp has stimulated individual and team growth. Each player has achieved personal milestones on and off the court. They are celebrating each other's successes. While our moments as a complete program have been limited, they have been productive. Our quest to become ONE continues every day in everything we do.
As we finish training camp and prepare for our first week of practice, I am confident that this month's moments apart have created an appreciation for future moments together—moments in which we will make history.
