September 16, 2023 | Softball
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State softball did not allow a hit in a fall doubleheader Friday against Wallace State Community College and Jones College. Playing without the run rule in effect, State won 8-0 and 17-0.
Â
Aspen Wesley set the tone early against Wallace State, facing nine batters in 3.0 innings and striking out eight of them. She did not allow a baserunner. Wesley earned defensive player of the game recognition for her efforts. Matalasi Faapito relieved and struck out six in 3.0 innings before Hosanna Lindblade closed out the ballgame.
Â
Offensively, State took advantage of nine walks and hit-by-pitches along with an error to build a 6-0 lead before Kiarra Sells launched a two-run home run in the sixth. She was named the offensive player of the game. Saleyna Daniel also added a double, and Ella Wesolowski drove in runs with a walk and a single.
Â
In Game 2, MSU attacked early and often, but the most-impressive inning was the sixth. State scored five runs on six hits before recording an out, including a triple from Sierra Sacco and a double from Delainey Everett.
Â
Jadyn Burney was the offensive standout against Jones, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored. She also stole two bases. Everett was the defensive player of the game, striking out four of the six she faced in 2.0 perfect innings to go along with her efforts at the plate.
Â
State returns to action on Friday, Sept. 22 when the Bulldogs will host Bevil State CC at Nusz Park. The game is slated for a 6 p.m. CT first pitch.
