Women's Golf Set for Fall Debut at the Carmel Cup

Bulldogs enter '23-24 season after reaching NCAA Championship in each of the last two seasons.
STARKVILLE – The Mississippi State women's golf squad opens its 2023-24 schedule on Friday, as they begin the year at the renowned Pebble Beach Golf Links for the Carmel Cup. The three-day event is set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The competing teams this year include SEC foes Arkansas, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Stanford and Texas Tech round out the eight-team field. The lineup for the Bulldog's this weekend includes familiar faces, while sporting its share of new faces as well.
Freshmen Avery Weed and Samantha Whateley lead off the day for State. Both Whately and Weed are entering their first collegiate tournament. Weed, an Ocean Springs native, joins the team as a reigning 6A individual and team state champion. Over the summer, Whateley chalked up a second-place finish in her homeland of South America in their individual championship.
Sophomore Izzy Pellot will be the third Bulldog on the course. Pellot, a two-time SEC Freshman Golfer of the Week, earned multiple freshmen records at State, highlighted by ranking second on par or better rounds, third on rounds in the 60's, and fourth on scoring average (73.50).
Ana Pina Ortega is set to tee off fourth in her first career Carmel Cup. The junior from Seville, Spain, shot a career average of 75.8, sporting a 18-hole best score of 71 at the Auburn Individual.
Chiara Horder is the third new face on the lineup for the Dawgs. Horder, a junior from Munich, Germany, joins the team after spending her first two seasons at Texas Tech. Before arriving at Mississippi State, Horder earned a victory in The Women's Amateur in the summer of '23.Â
Reigning SEC Individual Champion Julia Lopez Ramirez caps the lineup for the Bulldogs. Lopez Ramirez, winner of five individual collegiate championships, holds numerous career and season records, including the lowest season stroke average (70.10) last season.
Charlie Ewing returns for his fourth year as head coach. In those four years, the Dawgs have won five tournaments under Ewing, which is tied for the most tournament wins for any Bulldog coach. He says there is no better way to start the season than the Carmel Cup.
"It's such a great opportunity to learn about ourselves early in the year, especially since we get to play with six and have an extra player," Ewing said. "We know that playing on a US Open course in a competitive field will challenge us, but that's exactly what we want. It's going to be a fun week, and I'm excited to learn about this new group of Bulldogs!"
