August 25, 2023 | Track & Field
BUDAPEST, Hungary – Mississippi State's two representatives in the men's javelin at the World Athletics Championships did not advance to the final round after Friday morning's qualifying.
Â
Anderson Peters finished 16th with a throw of 78.49m, and Curtis Thompson was 30th with a mark of 74.21m. Both men saw their best throw come on their final attempt.
Â
In order to advance to Sunday's final, throwers needed to reach 83.00m or be among the top 12 marks. Peters was 1.29m shy of the top 12. He threw 78.02m on his first attempt, which put him in sixth place in his flight. After the second round, however, he had dropped back to seventh. He wouldn't climb any higher in his flight, and after one round of the second group's throws he had fallen back to 11th overall.
Â
Thompson was in 16th place in the pair's flight after two throws, tossing the implement 72.99m. He climbed to 14th in the flight on his final throw.
Â
The Bulldogs now have one representative still competing in Budapest. Marco Arop has reached Saturday's final in the men's 800m. The Canadian team captain will run for gold
at 1:30 p.m. CT. The race will air in the United States on CNBC.
