Arop Advances To 800m Semifinals At World Championships
August 22, 2023 | Track & Field
BUDAPEST, Hungary – Marco Arop confidently cruised to the semifinals of the men's 800m at the World Athletics Championships on Tuesday afternoon, high fiving his fellow competitor as he crossed the line.
Arop got blocked by the pack, sitting in sixth at the 200m mark, but he climbed into qualifying position at the bell, sitting in third place in his heat. He made his move on the back stretch, taking the lead with 200m to go and a half-second gap between his closest competition.
As he approached the line, he reached back and gave a subtle high five to Simone Baontini, congratulating the Italian on advancing with him. Arop's 1:45.05 would ultimately be the second-fastest time across the seven qualifying heats.
Jamaican Navasky Anderson also represented Mississippi State in the 800m. He finished fifth in his heat but was ultimately disqualified. Throughout the early heats, Anderson looked in position to advance, clocking a time of 1:45.81. That stood as the final time qualifier through four heats and would've been just 0.05 seconds off the eventual qualifying mark had he not been removed from the field.
Arop continues MSU's run at the World Athletics Championships on Thursday in the semifinals, which are set for 1:50 p.m. CT and will air in the United States on USA Network.
