#FromStateToSundays: Super Bowl Update
February 13, 2023 | Football
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State fans were once again able to join in on the Super Bowl celebration as Bulldogs Willie Gay Jr. and Chris Jones hoisted the Lombardi Trophy as members of the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night.
Â
Gay and Jones became the 10th and 11th players from MSU to be crowned a Super Bowl champion in the last decade. For Jones, it was his second time to win the big game and joined Dallas Cowboys great D.D. Lewis as the only Bulldogs to earn multiple Super Bowl rings.
Â
Playing in his first Super Bowl after missing the Chiefs' 2021 appearance due to injury, Gay finished second on the team with eight tackles in their 38-35 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. The Starkville native notched a pair of tackles for loss during the second quarter.
Â
Jones tallied three tackles and totaled a team-high four pressures according to Pro Football Focus (PFF).
Â
State also had a pair of multi-year Pro Bowlers on Philadelphia's roster as well. Darius Slay logged every defensive snap in the Eagles' secondary and made four tackles during his Super Bowl debut. Fletcher Cox also added a tackle and three pressures in his second Super Bowl appearance.
Â
A total of 41 different Bulldogs have now made 59 appearances at the Super Bowl with 25 players coming out on the winning end with Jones and Lewis claiming multiple championships.
