Darrione Rogers' Triple-Double Leads Mississippi State Past Mississippi Valley State, 99-35

STARKVILLE – Senior guard Darrione Rogers recorded a triple-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists to lead Mississippi State past Mississippi Valley State, 99-35, and close out its non-conference schedule inside Humphrey Coliseum on Friday.
Mississippi State enters conference action with five straight wins and a 13-2 overall record.
The triple-double by Rogers was the second of her career and the first by a Mississippi State player since Cynthia Hall recorded one against Louisiana on Dec. 16, 2000. Mississippi State also recorded three double-doubles in the performance, marking the first time in program history with a triple-double and three double-doubles in the same game.
"[Darrione Rogers], I love that kid," said head coach Sam Purcell. "She was one of the top transfer portal players in the country. The sacrifices that she has made to be willing to come off the bench and handle it with class. Watching her feel comfortable and come out and have a triple-double tonight speaks volumes to her character and who she is as a person."
It was a wire-to-wire dominant performance for Mississippi State who never trailed in the contest for the fifth time this season. Freshman forward/center Quanirah Montague finished with her first career double-double with 14 points, 13 rebounds and a team-high six blocks in 23 minutes, while freshman guard Jasmine Brown-Hagger turned in her first career double-digit scoring effort with 10 points in 28 minutes.
Graduate student forward Erynn Barnum surpassed a career-high rebound total for the second-straight game and posted 15 points and 15 rebounds in 32 minutes, while graduate student center Jessika Carter finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds in 17 minutes for her 34th career double-double
The freshman trio of Mjracle Sheppard, Montague and Brown-Hagger also all tied or surpassed previous career-high in minutes played.
Mississippi State raced out to a 33-5 lead at the end of the first quarter due in part to its suffocating defensive pressure from the opening tip. The Bulldogs forced 10 turnovers and turned it into 18 points in the initial 10 minutes. Senior guard Jerkaila Jordan scored 11 of her 17 points in the first quarter.
Mississippi State seized early momentum behind the home crowd by concluding the final 3:21 minutes of first quarter and entering the second quarter on a 17-0 run that moved the margin to 36-5. The Bulldogs continued to dominate in all phases and secured a 55-14 lead heading into the locker room.
The 55 points in the first half ties the most points in any half and the fourth overall 50-point half under Purcell.
The second half featured more of the same as Mississippi State opened up its largest lead of the game with 2:01 remaining in regulation on a pair of free throws from Sheppard.
The Bulldogs received 32 points from its bench and all eight available players scored in the effort. The 64-point win marks the largest margin of victory under Purcell and the largest since the Bulldogs defeated Murray State 124-43 on Nov. 15, 2019.
