No. 21 Bulldogs Drop 67-59 Contest At Georgia Tech
November 28, 2023 | Men's Basketball
ATLANTA – Mississippi State battled against Georgia Tech, but the No. 21 Bulldogs eventually suffered their first loss of the season by a score of 67-59 at the McCamish Pavilion on Tuesday night.
MSU outscored the Yellow Jackets by five over the final 20 minutes, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 13-point halftime deficit.
"I thought Georgia Tech played really, really well," State head coach Chris Jans said. "They were well-prepared. They took away some things that hadn't been taken away up until this point and made us search for some different offensive looks. They just had a great start. They had momentum. Their confidence grew, and we weren't able to mount that comeback that we wanted to."
Josh Hubbard, Jimmy Bell Jr. and D.J. Jeffries led an early charge offensively for MSU with flashy plays around the rim and from three-point range. The trio racked up a combined 19 points in the first period of play to give MSU a chance.
Hubbard had another impressive outing, finishing with a team-high 17 points. The freshman from Madison, Mississippi, continues to shine early on in his collegiate career. He's now scored in double figures in six straight games, cracking the 15-point mark in four of those contests.
Dashawn Davis scored 12 points for MSU. Jeffries totaled 10. Bell ended up with six points and paced the Bulldogs on the boards with 13 rebounds, but none of it was enough for State to avoid its first setback of the season following a 6-0 start.
"First and foremost, tip of the cap to [Georgia Tech head coach Damon Stoudamire] and his staff and players," Jans said. "We dug ourselves such a hole, and we played much harder in the second half. We played much more on the defensive end than we were accustomed to and anticipated playing, but I'm not sure we got off to the start that we wanted. Certainly, no disrespect to their players and their coaches because they did an excellent job, but we didn't play with the same intensity. We played harder, but first 11 possessions [of the second half], you get 5 turnovers. It's hard to overcome when you've got that big of a deficit."
State will attempt to bounce back on Sunday. That's when the Bulldogs host Southern. Tip is slated for 3 p.m. at Humphrey Coliseum.
