STARKVILLE – Following a 5-0 start fueled by an average margin of victory of 17.4 points per contest, Mississippi State jumped into the No. 25 spot in both the Associated Press and USA Today Top 25 polls announced Monday.
The Bulldogs have fired off three Power 5 non-conference wins over Arizona State (71-56), Washington State (76-64) and Northwestern (66-57). Both Arizona State and Northwestern are fellow 2023 NCAA Tournament squads.
State is one of eight programs nationally to end last weekend's action with at least a 5-0 record. The Bulldogs are joined by Miami as the only programs to sport three non-conference victories over Power 5 schools mentioned above.
The Maroon and White are ranked as a consensus top 25 program for the second consecutive season under Chris Jans. State climbed as high as No. 15 in last year's Associated Press poll. The last time the Bulldogs were ranked in back-to-back seasons came during a run of four straight seasons ranked from 2001-02 to 2004-05.
The Mississippi State men's and women's squads are among eight programs nationally to secure an AP Top 25 mark. The Bulldogs are joined by Tennessee from the SEC along with Baylor, Colorado, Connecticut, North Carolina, Southern Cal and Texas.
