Watson and Ferrie Earn SEC Player of the Week Honors
November 20, 2023 | Football
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State football's Nathaniel Watson and Kyle Ferrie each earned weekly honors from the Southeastern Conference for their stellar week 12 performances. Watson was named the SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week, while Ferrie was named the SEC Co-Freshman of the Week.
Â
Watson earned his second SEC Defensive Player of the Week honor after a career performance against Southern Miss. The Graduate from Maplesville, Ala., set a career-high with 21 tackles on Saturday to become the first Bulldog since 2000 to have a 20+ tackle game. The impressive tackle total for Watson was also the most tackles any SEC defender has had in a single game since 2017.
Â
On top of being the SEC's second-leading tackler overall with 116 tackles on the year, Watson entered Saturday as the SEC's leader in sacks. Entering the game with nine on the year, Watson picked up sack No. 10 while also causing a fumble on the play that would turn into points for Mississippi State. Already with a career-high in sacks, Watson is also one of just eight FBS players this year to have double-digit sacks.
Â
Ferrie picked up his second SEC Freshman of the Week honor after being perfect in all aspects of the kicking game against Southern Miss. The freshman from Searcy, Ark., was a perfect 4-for-4 in field goals and 3-for-3 in PATs on Saturday. Of Ferrie's four made field goals, two were from greater than 40 yards, including a 48-yarder for the team's first points of the afternoon.
Â
On Saturday, Ferrie was one of just three SEC kickers all season to go 4-for-4 or better in field goals, and he was the only SEC kicker to make multiple 40+ yard field goals during week 12. Lastly, his 48-yarder was the second-longest made kick by any SEC kicker on Saturday.
Â
Mississippi State will close out its regular season on Thursday, Nov. 23, when they host Ole Miss in the annual Egg Bowl. Kickoff for the in-state rivalry is set for 6:30 p.m.
