Bulldogs Fall Following Three-Set Battles
November 01, 2023 | Men's Tennis
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Mississippi State fought hard in the opening round of the ITA Fall National Championships on Wednesday winning first sets in both singles and doubles.
But after battling for three sets, the Bulldogs came up short in their bids to advance.
No. 68 Petar Jovanovic began the day by taking his first set against Alvin Tudorica, 6-4. Tudorica, a senior from USF, fought back to win the second set 6-3 and claimed the match with a 6-4 victory in the third.
Jovanovic took the court later that evening with doubles partner Benito Sanchez Martinez and quickly gained the advantage against Isaac Becroft and Tyler Zink of Oklahoma State by winning the opening set 7-5. The Cowboy senior/graduate duo won the second set by the same score and prevailed 10-2 in a final set tiebreaker to reach the Round of 16.
However, MSU's time on the West Coast won't end there. Jovanovic is set to play in a singles consolation match against 19th-ranked Ryan Fishback of Virginia Tech on Thursday at 12:45 p.m. CT. Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez will also compete in a doubles consolation showdown against Alabama's Filip Planinsek and Andrii Zimnokh at 5:30 p.m.
Jovanovic and Sanchez Martinez fell 8-3 to the Crimson Tide tandem during the Round of 16 at the ITA Southern Regional Championships in Auburn, Alabama on Oct. 15.
