No. 10 Razorbacks Strike Late to Best No. 21 Bulldogs 1-0 in Hard-Fought Regular Season Finale
October 26, 2023 | Soccer
Fayetteville, Ark. – No. 21 Mississippi State (10-4-4, 5-3-2 SEC) faced off with No.10 Arkansas (12-3-4, 8-1-1 SEC) on Thursday in Fayetteville. After a fierce defensive battle between two of the top squads in the Southeastern Conference waged on in Fayetteville, the Razorbacks found the back of the net late to take the 1-0 decision.
Reigning Defensive Player of the Week Maddy Anderson and the entire Bulldog defense was able to frustrate the Hogs throughout the match as Arkansas has enjoyed a multitude of fast starts this season, especially at home. State became just the fifth team to hold the Hogs scoreless in the first half this season and just the second team to do so in Fayetteville.
State registered eight shots throughout the matchup with an impressive 62.5% of them being on frame, forcing Phoebe Carver to make five key saves throughout the matchup. Maggie Wadsworth continued her attacking ways as she registered three shots with two of them being on goal.
With just five minutes remaining in the contest, Bea Franklin found the back of the net on an Emilee Hauser service for the game winner, claiming the outright SEC Championship for Arkansas.
With the conclusion of the regular season, State secured it's fifth season of 10+ wins in program history, including back-to-back 10+ win seasons for the first time in program history. Under Head Coach James Armstrong, the Bulldogs have enjoyed trips to the SEC Tournament each year with this marking the fifth straight trip, another program record.
Despite the loss, Mississippi State claimed the fourth seed in the upcoming SEC Tournament in Pensacola, Florida. The fourth seed is the highest seeding for the Bulldogs in the modern era of the Southeastern Conference Tournament and marks the first time that MSU will enjoy a bye as they will automatically find themselves in Tuesday's quarterfinals.
The No.4 Seeded Bulldogs will matchup with the No. 5 Seeded Crimson Tide of Alabama in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament Tuesday night in Pensacola. The matchup is slated for a 7:30 p.m. CT kick and will be live on the SEC Network.
