Maddy Anderson Earns Second SEC Defensive Player of the Week Nod of the Season
October 23, 2023 | Soccer
STARKVILLE – State's most decorated keeper of all time, Maddy Anderson, has once again proven her mettle by earning SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season. Anderson's remarkable achievements as a goalkeeper have solidified her position as a standout in the history of soccer at Mississippi State University as she continues to rewrite the record books.
This recognition comes on the heels of a string of exceptional performances from Anderson throughout the month of October, where she has achieved five consecutive shutouts in a series of challenging matches. These remarkable victories include a hard-fought 1-0 win at Florida, another 1-0 victory against Ole Miss at home in the Magnolia Cup, a dominant 2-0 triumph on the road against the then 18th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats, a goalless draw against Vanderbilt at home, and an impressive 2-0 win over 16th-ranked Alabama on the road.
Maddy Anderson has been a stalwart in the Mississippi State goal, leading the school in shutouts with an impressive tally of 24 for her career. For the entire season, she has conceded a mere 10 goals, a testament to her exceptional goalkeeping prowess. Anderson now stands atop the SEC leaderboard in terms of shutouts this season, boasting nine clean sheets (or 11, including combined shutouts). Her exceptional performance also places her third in save percentage at .831 and goals allowed average, which stands at a mere 0.60. Additionally, she ranks fourth in the conference for the number of saves made, tallying 49 this season.
What truly sets Anderson's recent streak apart is her ability to deliver shutouts, even on the road and against ranked opponents. The victory over No. 18 Kentucky was particularly noteworthy, as they were undefeated at the time and yet failed to score against Anderson's resolute goalkeeping. Equally impressive was the match against No. 16 Alabama, who boasted a formidable 28-game home unbeaten streak but could not find the back of the net against the indomitable Maddy Anderson.
Maddy Anderson's outstanding performance is a testament to her unwavering commitment to excellence and her role as a driving force being a caption of this year's squad. With her incredible talent and dedication, she has become a force to be reckoned with in women's soccer, and her achievements continue to shine as brightly as ever.
