McDougal Earns U.S. Women’s Youth National Team Call-Up
January 10, 2023 | Soccer
CHICAGO, Ill. – Mississippi State soccer's Molly McDougal became one of 34 players to receive an invitation for the U.S. Soccer's Youth National Team combined U-18/U-19 training camp, held at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Carson, California.
"We are very excited for this opportunity for Molly to represent herself, and our program, at the highest level," head coach James Armstrong said.
Of the 34 players called up, McDougal will arrive as one of only 16 players currently playing collegiately. Of those 16, she's the only player from the Southeastern Conference to be selected for the camp. All 34 players are age-eligible for the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, the host of which has yet to be determined.
The announcement also marks the second time McDougal has trained with U.S. Soccer's Youth National Team, her first coming in 2021 with the United States U-20 team.
"It's an honor to get invited back to camp and have the opportunity to represent Mississippi State and my club, D'Feeters Kicks Soccer Club," McDougal said. "A huge thank you to my teammates, staff and coaches for all they've done to help me get to where I am now."
In her first collegiate season as a Bulldog, the freshman logged 874 minutes, starting in eight of her 15 matches played for State. Her first collegiate start came in a 3-1 win at FIU. McDougal's defensive efforts in four games played across 10 days helped push MSU's unbeaten record out to a 6-0-2 non-conference record. During her four-game stretch of consecutive starts, the Maroon and White's backline only allowed one goal.
The Bulldogs are coming off their most historic season in program history after recording their first win in both the SEC and NCAA Tournaments, both in dramatic fashion with the game-winning goals being scored in the 99th minute and 87th minute, respectively. State also earned its highest-ever ranking in program history, coming in at No. 21 in the United Soccer Coaches' poll after securing the program's first 3-0 start in conference play.
