Women's Tennis Adds One Double And Two Singles Wins On Saturday
September 17, 2022 | Women's Tennis
GREENVILLE, S.C. – Mississippi State's women's tennis picked a pair of singles victories on Day 2 of the Debbie Southern Fall Classic hosted by Furman on Saturday.Â
Â
Maria Rizzoli defeated the 73rd-ranked Kylie Bilchev of Georgia Tech 6-3, 6-7(4), 7-5. This is her second ranked win of the tournament, with the first coming yesterday against No. 6 Cameron Morra of Duke.Â
Â
"Maria has provided the biggest highlights of the weekend," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "With her win over the 6th-ranked player in the country yesterday, then she backed it up with an extremely gritty win over the 73rd-ranked player today."Â
Â
Emily Surcey notched her first win of the fall by dominating her match against Furman's Alexa Griffith with a 6-2, 6-2 decision.Â
Â
Both Alexandra Mikhailuk and Alessia Tagliente won their first set, but fell in three sets to their opponents.Â
Â
Surcey and Dharani Niroshan took down the tandem of Sophia Hatton and Eleni Louka of Clemson 8-2.Â
Â
The duo of Sydney Hrehor and Tagliente fell 8-1 to the No. 3 pair of Brooke Killingsworth and Anna Brylin of Wake Forest, while Mikhailuk and Rizzolo lost to Casie Wooten and Whiteley Pate of Wake Forest.Â
Â
Maddie Bemisderfer and Maddie McKee dropped a close set to Alexa Griffith and Ellie Schulson of Furman 8-6.Â
Â
"We have had a whole bunch of challenging matches in both singles and doubles in the two days of the tournament so far," Greenan said. "Win or lose the girls are responding well. Every match we play this time of year is valuable. We have had highlight wins and have come up short in some close battles. Either way we are learning more about what we need to focus on moving forward. We are all enjoying the battles and excited for more tomorrow."
The tournament concludes on Sunday with one round of singles play starting at 8 a.m. CT.Â
