#StateToTheShow: WPF Series 3
July 06, 2022 | Softball
STARKVILLE – In its third series of the season, WPF and the Smash It Sports Vipers went international, hosting Team Mexico for three games.
Â
Mississippi State alumni Annie Willis and Fa Leilua saw their squad shutout Mexico by a combined score of 34-0, ending all three games early via run rule.
Â
On July 3 the Vipers set the tone early with a 17-0 win in four innings before going on to an 8-0 victory in five innings. Willis came on for the final 3.0 innings of Game 2 and struck out five batters to earn her first professional win. She allowed just two of 17 batters she faced to reach base.
Â
Leilua pinch hit against Mexico in a 9-0 victory on July 4 and reached safely on an error. She remained in the game to play shortstop as well.
Â
Willis now leads the Vipers with a 1.75 ERA and is fourth in WPF, trailing only the USSSA Pride's Monica Abbot, Jailyn Ford and Samantha Show who have not allowed an earned run. Willis has struck out 10 in 12.0 innings pitched this season.
Â
WPF Series 4 will only include the USSSA Pride in games against Team Australia, Team Japan and Team USA. Series 5, which was slated between the Vipers and the Florida Vibe on July 8-10 has been cancelled. The Smash It Sports team will resume play in Series 6 on July 12-14 in Evansville, Indiana.
Â
Women's Professional Fastpitch (WPF) is the official professional softball league in the United States, founded by USA Softball, USSSA and Smash It Sports. WPF replaces the former NPF and will showcase the best athletes in softball, provide a world-class experience for fans, and connect young girls to their idols.
Â
The Smash It Sports and the USSSA Pride will play a series of exhibitions across the country this summer as the inaugural season will focus on highlighting the league's launch and attracting new fans and partners. All games will stream on usssalive.com.
