STARKVILLE – With summer workouts underway earlier this week, Mississippi State men's basketball has landed Jamel Horton, the 2021-22 America East Defensive Player of the Year, to an Athletic Scholarship Agreement (ASA) announced Tuesday.
Horton, a 6-4 guard from Queens, New York, is a graduate transfer. He played the 2020-21 and 2021-22 at UAlbany after he spent his freshmen and sophomore seasons at Pratt Community College in Kansas.
"Jamel Horton brings great size, vision and the ability to score at a variety of spots on the floor," head coach Chris Jans said. "He's obviously a feisty competitor with the defensive accolades he has already achieved. We're pleased that he has become a Bulldog."
In addition to America East Defensive of the Year accolades, Horton tucked away All-America East Second-Team honors last season. He started in 41 of 46 career games for the Great Danes and racked up 32 career outings in double figures. The New York native ended the 2021-22 season with 20 straight games with double digit scoring which were fueled by five 20-plus point performances.
Horton posted 12.8 points, 3.9 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game last season. He and Hartford's Austin Williams were the only America East players to rank among the conference's top 11 in scoring (12.8 – 11th), assists (3.9 – 2nd) and steals (1.1 – 10th).
Horton's top scoring efforts were a pair of 24-point games against New Hampshire (Feb. 19) and Hartford (March 1) in 2021-22.
Horton connected on 42.2 percent of his field goal attempts, 35.8 percent on his three-pointers and 73.4 percent at the foul line. His assist-to-turnover ratio also ranked inside the America East's top 5 during both seasons.
Horton notched five or more assists in 16 career games. His career-high eight dimes came at No. 10 Kentucky (Nov. 22) last season. On the defensive end, Horton had eight of his 12 career games of multiple steals in 2021-22.
