Mississippi State Women’s Golf Concludes Day Two of NCAA Championships
May 21, 2022 | Women's Golf
Scottsdale, Ariz. – The Mississippi State women's golf team completed the second round of the NCAA Championships on Saturday. The Bulldogs will head into Sunday's third round in a tie for 16th.
After 36 holes, the Raptor Course at the Grayhawk Golf Club has presented a challenge for the elite members of women's collegiate golf. Heading into Sunday, only two teams are still shooting in single-digits, Stanford (+5) and Oregon (+9). Although State sits in a tie for 16th, just five strokes separate the Bulldogs from 11th. As a team, State has battled through 36 holes to card a score of 29-over par (605).
Mississippi State was led by senior Blair Stockett through round two. Stockett rolled in five straight pars on Holes 1 thru 5 and sunk two birdies on the day to finish tied for 47th with a score of 6-over par. Stockett has carded the third-most birdies of the event with seven.
Hannah Levi concluded her second round on Saturday with a score of 5-over par 77 and sits in a tie of 56th. Levi, who recorded four straight pars on holes 3 thru 6, started to find her groove on hole three, the 12th hole of the day, as she recorded an even-par score in the final seven holes of the afternoon.
SEC Freshman of the Year, Julia Lopez Ramirez, added three birdies to her Championship total on Saturday. The freshman from Spain shot a 7-over par 79 and sits in a tie for 69th, heading into Sunday's third round. Lopez Ramirez's three birdies on the day give her eight on the weekend, which is the second-most amongst the 135 golfers competing at the Championships.
Abbey Daniel and Ashley Gilliam rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs on Saturday. Daniel concluded her second round with a score of 6-over par 78, while Gilliam shot a 3-over par 78.
Gilliam bounced back nicely on day two with a 9-stroke improvement, tied for the fourth-best improvement in the field, between the two rounds. A big reason for her improvement was her strong play on the front nine in round two. After posting a score of 9-over par on Friday, Gilliam cut eight strokes from her total for a 1-over par score on Saturday. Her steady improvement on Saturday helped Gilliam jump nine spots on the leaderboard.
State will tee off at approximately 12:41 PM CT with fellow SEC foe South Carolina and Wake Forrest from the ACC. At the completion of the third round, the top 15 teams and nine individuals from non-advancing teams will advance to a final round of stroke play on Monday.
Quoting Coach Ewing
"Obviously, it's a tough golf course and it's going to take shots from you every opportunity it can. More than anything, we could have helped ourselves just by limiting our mistakes to bogeys rather than letting them compound to become worse. The good news is that there is still plenty out in front of us to accomplish and we can really position ourselves well with a good day of golf [on Sunday]. We have some really good players who are capable of some great golf so our belief is high that we will do our job tomorrow."
