Record-Breaking Baserunning Keeps Bulldogs Alive

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Mississippi State used speed to stay alive in the NCAA Tournament on Saturday evening, stealing five bases on its way to an 6-3 victory over Howard.
State's (34-25) five stolen bases broke the school record for the most swipes in an NCAA Tournament game. MSU had stolen four bases in the tournament three times with the last occurrence coming in 2015.
Mississippi State had scored four runs before recording its first hit in the third frame. Brylie St. Clair and Chloe Malau'ulu took the opportunity to show off their offensive versatility. Before Malau'ulu's double in the third, the duo had walked twice, stolen two bases and brought home a run on a sacrifice bunt that saw the runner safe at the plate. They finished a combined 4-for-4 with two doubles, two walks and four stolen bases.
Madisyn Kennedy reached on a fielder's choice in the second inning and came around to score from second on a dropped fly ball. She was ruled safe once video review showed her hand got under the tag from Howard (31-24). She also drove in a run in the third with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly, and Mia Davidson brought one home with a sacrifice fly in the second.
In the circle, Aspen Wesley went the whole way on 97 pitches, striking out six. She allowed three runs in the sixth.
Paige Cook – Stole a base to help MSU's record-breaking effort.
Mia Davidson – Picked off a runner in the second inning to extend her school record to 57 runners thrown out in her career (44 CS, 13 PO) … beat out an infield single and hit a sacrifice fly.
Madisyn Kennedy – Drove in a run with a sacrifice fly … scored from second on a dropped fly ball in right field.
Chloe Malau'ulu – Recorded her sixth outfield assist of the year and No. 14 of her career which is tied for third in MSU career history … doubled twice and stole two bases … it was her fourth career multi-double game and third career multi-steal game.
Brylie St. Clair – Drew a walk and singled … also reached on a fielder's choice on a sacrifice bunt that scored a run from third … stole two bases and scored twice … came home on a first-and-third double steal attempt that saw the runner thrown out at second … game marked her third time stealing multiple bases in her career.
Aspen Wesley – Threw her third complete game of the year and struck out four.
Brylie St. Clair drew a leadoff walk. With one out, she stole second and advanced to third when the catcher's throw sailed into center field. St. Clair came home on a sacrifice bunt by Shea Moreno.

Addison Purvis drew a leadoff walk, and Phoebe Florian pinch ran at first base. Madisyn Kennedy reached on a fielder's choice that saw Florian retired at second. Riley Hull then walked to put two runners on. Montana Davidson hit a fly ball into right field that was dropped. Kennedy scored from second on the play after a review showed she got her hand in under the tag. Hull took third and Montana Davidson second on the play. St. Clair laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Hull and reached second when the throw went to the plate. Mia Davidson hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring her sister from third, but St. Clair was thrown out at third to end the inning.
