Bulldogs Wrap Round One of New Haven Regional
May 16, 2022 | Men's Golf
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Mississippi State will head into the second round of the NCAA New Haven Regional tied for 10th at even par. Ruan Pretorius led the way for the Bulldogs on day one with his 3-under par performance, highlighted by five birdies, to sit among the top-10 players in the field. Â
Â
As a team, State tacked on 16 birdies throughout play. MSU is tied with No. 31 Charlotte and is three strokes behind their next competitor.
Â
"I thought our guys really battled today," head coach Dusty Smith said. "I know we certainly didn't have our best stuff, but I feel like we are in a fine position with a lot of golf to play. Ruan and Hunter [Logan] really stepped up for us and Pedro [Cruz Silva] did a great job battling back late in the round."
Â
"We made too many simple mistakes that cost us a good round," Smith continued. "We made enough birdies to post a solid score today but ultimately the soft bogeys cost us. The next few rounds should be a good test with some stronger winds. We look forward to the challenge."
Â
Pretorius started the round with a birdie on Hole 1 and added another birdie on Hole 6. Starting the back nine, Pretorius sank a pair of back-to-back birdies on Holes 10 and 11. Pretorius is tied for 9th heading into Round 2.
Â
Hunter Logan contributed big for the Bulldogs with a 1-under score. Logan added four birdies throughout the day and sits tied for 28th.
Â
Pedro Cruz Silva and Ford Clegg both shot 2-over for the day. Cruz Silva had a shaky start of his round but battled during the back nine with three birdies on Holes 13, 16 and 18. Clegg played steady golf and went even for par on 16 holes.
Â
Harrison Davis rounded out for the Bulldogs at 3-over. Davis tacked on three birdies throughout his first round.
